      BEHIND THE SCENES…

February newsletter was prepared for mailing by Liz Ashley, Edna Catlow, Jackie Chaussee, Eleanor Hansen, Clara Icenogle, Hope McIrvin, and Betty Ray.  Special thanks for coming in on a weekend!

And speaking of Betty Ray, she also spent a Saturday in February cleaning, priming and painting one of the kitchen shelving units.  Thank you, Betty, for further enhancing our kitchen.

We are grateful to Dave Werings for the two ramps which make it much easier to get the riding mower in and out of the shed.

Many thank yous to Bill Blocksom, Don Heller and Carol Andersen who pitched in #363 and cleaned up a kitchen mishap when it was discovered.

The Tribute for Fred Van Abkoude which was held February 6th was well attended, with approximately 200 people sharing stories and jokes and memories and a delicious buffet.  Many hands and hearts worked together to make the afternoon gathering as special as it was.  We would especially like to thank the following for the generous gift of their time and talents:

Abbey Toland, Susan Updike, Brian Updike, Evelyn Fricke, Al Helmer, Bill Okrasinski, Joan Okrasinski, John Morris, Betty Ray, Melissa Kyles, Jackie Chaussee, Lou Irvin, Julie Stephens, and Fred’s family.

We think Fred would have enjoyed himself thoroughly.

Kudos to Bill Burge, Web Master extraordinaire, who has revamped our website.  If you haven’t checked out our website, go to www.scappooseseniorcenter.com and see what you think.  We think it’s looking good!  Thanks Bill!

Last, but not least…we are grateful to TRANSWESTERN AVIATION and THE SOUTH COUNTY SPOTLIGHT for the ad space for menus and activities that they provide each week.

SERVICES THAT BENEFIT YOU AND THE CENTER

** FAXES ($1.00 per page) and COPIES (10c black/white; 50c for color) at front desk.

** Remember you can RECYCLE your pop cans and bottles.  There are two garbage can containers available out next to the medical shed for these.  All proceeds are given to the center by member Hal Gilbert who recycles them for us daily.

** Newspapers & a minimal amount of magazines can be recycled in the drop box located in the parking lot.  Proceeds come back to the Center; however we do have to pay rent on the drop box so the quicker we fill it up the better.  Please encourage or offer to recycle for your neighbors and family too.

WHO WE ARE

In the next couple of issues we will be introducing to you the many volunteers who make up the various departments that help make up this Senior Center.  Among our membership, we have been graced with an abundance of talent, creativity, vitality, strength and generosity.  Between us we share hundreds of year’s worth of unique experiences, knowledge, beliefs and feelings.  When that compounded energy is shared, we can do just about anything we put our minds to.  So look around, check out #1232 our many assets, meet our tremendous volunteers, join in if you wish or just enjoy.

FRONT DESK VOLUNTEERS

There may still be some people in this world who believe a “receptionist” merely answers phones and smiles when greeting the public.  This is a very important part of the “front desk” position at the Center, but only a portion of the many tasks required to help keep the Center running smoothly.  There are reams of paperwork, computer records, correspondence, and other secretarial duties, as well as a multitude of care giving needs to be fulfilled and numerous details to be filed away in brain banks…and hearts.  If you haven’t met all of the people listed below, stop by and introduce yourself!

DAY                           MORNING                    AFTERNOON
Monday                                    Eleanor Hansen                                   Gerry Gould

Tuesday                                   Joanne Steinmetz                              Joanne Steinmetz

Wednesday                             Kathy Antonich                                   Linda Graham

Thursday                                 Jackie Chaussee                                 Jackie Chaussee

Friday                                      Betty Ray                                            Cheryl Werings

Tracking, accounting for and turning in the daily monetary intake is part of the “receptionist’s” job.  However, the banking aspect is then handled by the following volunteers:

Carol Andersen

Jackie Chaussee

Joan Okrasinski

BINGO VOLUNTEERS

If you haven’t attended Monday night Bingo, you wouldn’t believe the amount of activity that takes place.  Prior to the actual games, the kitchen is open, serving hamburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and various other snacks.  Desert is available during the break also.  All of that entails the usual prep work, cooking, taking orders, clean-up, etc.

The tables and the board are also prepared for play before people arrive, and as they do they purchase game cards and markers.  Those working the floor don’t get much rest during the evening as they check winning cards and keep things flowing smoothly.

Following are the energetic souls who make Bingo night one of our most successful ventures.
